Sweden-based cleantech company Rebaba and modular energy hub developer Smartports have announced a strategic partnership to integrate circular battery storage into Smartports’ solar carport network, accelerating deployment across Sweden, France, and other European markets.
The collaboration positions Rebaba as Smartports’ designated battery system technology provider, bringing Swedish-made second-life EV battery storage to a rapidly growing solar-plus-storage portfolio.
The partnership combines Smartports’ modular carport architecture, capable of hosting solar panels and integrated EV charging, with Rebaba’s circular battery systems, designed to extend the operational life of automotive-grade batteries. By turning underutilized parking areas into distributed energy hubs, the collaboration enables on-site generation, storage, and consumption of renewable energy, reducing reliance on the grid and cutting total energy costs.
Paula Runsten, co-founder and CEO of Rebaba, described the move as a “major technology milestone and a scale moment for both teams.” She emphasized that integrating circular battery systems allows property owners and drivers to access reliable on-site power, optimize energy use, and advance decarbonization efforts across multiple sectors.
Julian Lundberg, co-founder and CEO of Smartports, noted that the collaboration provides a future-proof energy backbone that complements Smartports’ solar canopies and charging infrastructure. The integration facilitates a rapid European rollout, offering cities and commercial operators a modular solution for electrified mobility and cost-efficient, resilient energy delivery.
Scaling Solar-Plus-Storage for Commercial Applications
The collaboration comes amid increasing demand for distributed energy solutions in retail, logistics, campuses, and public parking. Rebaba’s circular storage systems leverage second-life EV batteries, lowering emissions and lifecycle costs while maintaining safety and performance standards tailored for commercial applications. Smartports’ standardized carport design allows quick deployment with minimal ground impact, making it possible to convert existing parking lots into energy hubs without land expansion.
On-site storage addresses common grid constraints by smoothing peak demand and ensuring reliable charging, supporting commercial operators’ energy resilience and operational continuity. Combined, the solar-plus-storage solution provides a circular, modular, and cost-efficient approach to meeting growing EV charging needs across Europe.
